I spent $3,000 on a rig to feel like a professional athlete, but the most realistic part is the genuine, soul-crushing lower back pain I get after 20 minutes of driving in it.
NEWS FLASH
Regulatory Shift: The FIA is implementing targeted rule changes for the Miami GP to fix safety issues following Ollie Bearman’s 50G crash. Key adjustments include reducing qualifying energy harvesting from 8MJ to 7MJ and increasing "super clipping" power 🤮 (sorry that word makes me instantly vomit now) to 350kW to encourage flat-out laps. In-race boost mode is now capped at 250kW outside of straights to minimize dangerous speed differentials. While not a total overhaul, these "small" tweaks aim to improve racing quality without disrupting the 2026 competitive balance.
Visual Overhaul: iRacing is undergoing a massive architectural shift with "Spark," a bespoke graphics engine built for performance over aesthetics. Moving away from third-party engines like Unreal, Spark prioritizes low latency and high-frequency physics. Key upgrades include a multi-threaded architecture that ends single-core bottlenecks, a 50% reduction in audio load for better spatial reverb, and advanced foveated rendering for VR. Night racing gets a total reboot with hundreds of dynamic light sources, ensuring the future of the sim feels as real as it looks.
Tax Trap: Italian police are checking the bank accounts of every driver on the F1 grid. They believe stars skipped out on paying taxes for races at Monza and Imola. Letters were sent out demanding to see records from 2025 and earlier. In Italy, if you earn money while racing there, the government wants their share. If a driver owes more than €50,000, it’s a crime that could lead to massive fines. It’s just a paperwork check for now, but this "administrative inspection" could cost the world’s fastest drivers millions.

MOTORSPORTS REPORT
Charter Lockdown: Starting in 2027, IndyCar will ban "Open Entries" for all races except the Indy 500. The move limits fields to the 25 chartered teams to boost franchise value and streamline supplier logistics ahead of the new 2028 car and engine debut.
Back in Action: Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, and Denny Hamlin gave Chicagoland a glowing review after a 2-day tire test. Drivers report the surface is "super rough" and "edgy," promising chaotic, multi-lane racing for the July 4 return.
Dream Careers: Snag a role this week as an MGU Lead for GM’s F1 division, a CNC Machinist at Team Penske, or a STEM Delivery Specialist at Williams. From the Front Lines to the Front Row
Most people use sim racing to escape the daily grind. For Fredric Powell, it’s about honing a skill set forged in the highest-stakes environments imaginable.
Hailing from South Boston, Virginia, Fredric isn’t your average hobbyist. He’s a U.S. Army Military Police veteran, an Afghanistan veteran, and a Purple Heart recipient. When he hung up the uniform, he didn’t slow down; he stepped into a cruiser as a Police Officer and Deputy. Today, he channels that discipline into serving as a driving instructor for Racing for Heroes at the legendary Virginia International Raceway.
The Mission Beyond the Track
Fredric’s involvement with Racing for Heroes highlights the therapeutic and developmental power of motorsports. For him, the transition from tactical maneuvers to apex hunting was a natural evolution.
The Goal: Continuing to use sim racing as a tool for both fun and sharp skill honing.
The Drive: Balancing a deep passion for racing with a dedicated family life.
Life in the Fast Lane
When he isn't dissecting telemetry or guiding vets through the "Esses" at VIR, Fredric is a massive hockey fan. He recently caught the NHL’s first outdoor game in Florida—proving that even a guy from a racing mecca appreciates some action on the ice.
For Fredric, the journey has been about taking "really great experience" and passing it forward to the next generation of drivers. Whether it's high-speed instruction or a family weekend, he’s proof that the hustle never stops—it just changes gears.
